First Presbyterian Church

First Presbyterian Church was founded in July 1904 when S. Hall Young arrived in Fairbanks and found a town of cabins and tents with 500 inhabitants. Young could not afford a downtown lot so he settled on one at Seventh and Cushman, where the church remains today. He built the church and a frame cabin for $5400. The first service in the church was the first Sunday of November 1904. The church was formally organized on April 29, 1905 with 28 members.

A new church was built in 1931 and at that time the original church was moved to the back of that new building. In 1967, the original church was moved to Pioneer Park and is still in use today for weddings. The third church building was constructed in 1956 with additions and upgrades added through the years. In 2004, the church completed a renovation along with new construction.

First Presbyterian has made the decision to stay on the original corner of Seventh and Cushman and to continue downtown ministry. Today our membership is 300 plus with three full-time and three part-time staff.
